mm y buscastes información en el manual oficial de PHP sobre la función que usas para darle formato a la fecha?
$hoy = strftime("%b%d",$hoy);
http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.strftime.php
Solo tienes que darle formato al que necestitas ..
(podrías usar tambien date() ...)
