saludos

tengo hecha una red desde mi maquina en Linux hacia otra maquina con windows xp

el problema que tengo es que ha veces todo funciona de maravilla y otras donde no veo a nadie conectado, solo me aparece el nombre del grupo de trabajo

como soy nuevo en Linux no se por donde empezar a ver que puede estar mal

algún consejo??

Te aseguraste que SAMBA esté como un servicio al iniciar ubuntu?

Que distro usas, Ubuntu o Xubuntu?

En *buntu viene instalado por defecto sambaclient y éste se carga al arrancar. Pero no instala por defecto el servidor samba y smbfs, cuando deseas compartir carpetas de tu sistema entonces *buntu 7.10 instala automáticamente samba (el servicio) pero no instala smbfs (el sistema de archivos de samba). Eso pudiera ser una razón de error.

Y si usas Xubuntu, Thunar no navega nativamente las comparticiones samba. Para eso debes instalar fusesamba que se encarga de montar las comparticiones para que puedas navegarlas con thunar.

El samba si inicia como servicio al arrancar la maquina

tengo Ubuntu 7.10 y no tenia el smbfs instalado, ya lo instale (hoy mismo) y nada todavía

algo mas que pueda hacer??

¿Marcan algún error los logs de samba? --> Revisa /var/logs/samba.log
¿algún error si ejecutas $ testparm?
¿Cómo tienes tu fichero de configuración de samba? --> postea /etc/samba/smb.conf

otra cosa rara, desde la maquina en Windows si pueden acceder a mi carpeta compartida

Entiendo que security = user es el valor por defecto, pero prueba a descomentar esa línea.

Y ese no es el log de samba, es el archivo de configuración: samba.conf
en el directorio /var/log/ debe estar uno o varios logs, mira por alla.
