al final consegui enviar contenido HTML.
cambiando "\r\n" simplemente por "\n" funciona a la perfeccion.
sin embargo en el propio manual de php hacen incapie en usar "\r\n". puede ser devido a alguna opcion del servidor Apache de mi sitio web.
