no se puede conectar al servidor sql!!!!

hola, tengo un problema, esta es la primera vez que utilizo el microsoft.net Framework y no logro hacer que se conecte con un programa que utiliza sql server, no tengo acceso al codigo de dicho programa, como le puedo hacer para conectarlo.
