Una precision... SQL servers hay muchos!! SQL es un standard, si quieres referirte al producto de Microsoft debes decir "Microsoft SQL server".
Si quieres un SQL server bueno, rapido y super confiable te recomiendo Postgres (http://postgresql.org/) y tambien Mysql (http://www.mysql.org) ambos son multiplataforma y ademas Software Libre ;)
