Es raro lo que comentás, no me ha pasado. La propiedad es en realidad offsetHeight. Las diferencias entre style.height y offsetHeight son básicamente 2:
1) style.height devuelve un string constituído por un valor y la unidad px, mientras que offsetHeight devuelve un número
2)offsetHeight incluye, además del height, el valor del padding.
