No me funciona la propiedad clear:both

Bueno chicos antes de crear este tema busque por la web todo lo relacionado con el clear:both ya que quiero estirar una capa en la barra lateral para que no se vea vacía, pero agrego esta funcion en el html <div class="clearAll"></div> y no funciona
