Ya he cambiado a XHTML las páginas principales de mi web y cargan como un tiro:

Supongo que ya habrás hecho el trabajo, al menos en tu index, sim embargo en el mismo se puede apreciar

No quiero desalentarte, pero eso es igual a no haber hecho nada.

No alcanza con poner un Doctype, hay que respetar las reglas que ese Doctype implican.
Te sugiero que empieces por algun buen manual de Xhtml
