Primero, creo que MySQL no soporta Subselects por eso no puedes hacer lo que quieres.
Intenta esto
SELECT MAX(COUNT(*)) FROM TABLA GROUP BY CAMPO
No se por que dices que necesitas hacer un max de un count si no veo por ningun lado el Count en tu query
