Puedes probar con la opción -W,
En la ayuda del comando
ping:
Cita: -W timeout
Time to wait for a response, in seconds. The option affects only timeout in absense of any responses, otherwise ping waits for two RTTs.
Quizás te ayude en combinación con -i o lo que mejor se adapte a lo que necesitas.
