Resolución de Pantalla + Debian

Resolución de Pantalla + Debian
Hola!

Acabo de instalar Debian 4.0r4a, todo bien. Lo único es que la resolución de pantalla no la puedo cambiar, solo me muestra 640x480. Yo la quiero cambiar a una que sea más fácil de ver todo.

Sé que hay que editar el archivo xorg.conf pero exactamente no sé que es lo que hay que hacer, acá se los dejo por si le quieren echar un vistazo.

También he ejecutado

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg 
pero nada, además que no sé muy bien como configurar por alli, cuando me meti por alli lo que hice fue deñar el sistema ya que luego no arrancaba :(.

Tengo un monitor AUSE vistavalue de 17'' a color.

Si tocas el Xorg y se dañan las graficas, solamente ejecuta sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg y vuelve a todo por defecto, per en el caso de cambiar la resolucion y si usaste dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg tendria que haberte resuelto el problema.

Sustituye todo el contenido del archivo xorg.conf que tienes, por los datos que agregué dentro de CODE.
Fíjate que en 'modes' dejé "1280x1024" , puedes cambiar por otra resolución, por ejemplo "1024x768"

Antes de hacer estos cambios, haz lo siguiente de una terminal.
cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup

Esto es por si algo sale mal y no entra a la X, si ocurre esto.
cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Para reiniciar el entrono gráfico, sin necesidad de reiniciar el ordenador: Control+Alt+BackSpace

Bueno yo soy el que les va a agradecer ya que parece que se soluciono en mi caso, (tengo el mismo monitor y la misma targeta de video de vanessita) pues la resolución de gdm era distinta a la del escritorio y cuando reinicio (ya que ctrl+alt+espaciadora no me sirvió) vi la pantalla de inicio bien configurada con una resolución adaptada a la pantalla. Pero ahora el splash screen se ve muy grande y no he podido adaptarlo a la pantalla me pofrian ayudar con eso? tengo ubuntu 8.04.1 Gracias

Prueba agregar en SubSection "Display" lo siguiente: Virtual 1280 1024
No aseguro que funcione, porque no me he tenido ese problema.

Una aclaración la tecla BackSpace no es la 'espaciadora'.
(Bk Sp, tecla Retroceso). Tecla que mueve el cursor de texto hacia la izquierda, eliminando un caracter.

Gracias paulos ya modifique el xorg y lo veré que pasa, tengo otro problema y es que al abrir una aplicación se abre la ventana pegada a la parte superior de la pantalla por debajo del panel superior de gnome y no hallo como solucionarlo, ya que si necesito mover la ventana no puedo, ya he probado en sistema/preferencias/ventanas y me da este error:
No se puede iniciar la aplicación de preferencias para su gestor de ventanas

El gestor de ventanas «compiz» no ha registrado una herramienta de configuración

y reviso el configurador de compiz y no tiene ninguna opción para arreglar este fallo.
